Billy Bishop Goes to War
Published in Paperback by Talonbooks Ltd (January, 1998)
Average review score:

Timeless Musical Play Provides Unique Profile of Famous AceJohn Gray's play, a musical tribute to Canada's famous WWI ace Billy Bishop, VC, first performed in the 1970s, has become a classic of the Canadian theatre. It is still being performed in many places in North America, as well as other parts of the world, by theatre groups, and John Gray and Eric Peterson recently (within the past year or so) reprised their roles in "Billy Bishop Goes To War" on stage for a new generation of Canadians. The play is not only entertaining but also reasonably historically accurate, and the music is excellent. The play is sophisticated in its treatment of the subject, hilarious in places, and rather moving. When it was first performed, quite a few World War One flyers were still around to see the play, and many of them gave it high marks. It would have been fun to know what Bishop would have thought of it, had he lived into his eighth decade. The book is recommended, but make sure to see the play if it comes to your neighbourhood. By the way, Gray has also written a musical on the life of woman flyer Amelia Earhart.

Biscuits in the Cupboard

Tap into the joyous simplicity of the canine soulMy 7-year-old nephew loves this book. I'm 34 and I love it just as much! Many of these poems are just what dog poets would write if they could, evoking the bliss of mealtime, the exhilaration of running leashless, the fear of thunder and the vague menace of chicken bones. The pictures are equally irresistible (I love the Great Dane who humbly regrets his inability to fit onto the page). If you love dogs, you want this book. If your young child loves dogs, you NEED this book.

Blackrobe (Canadians, Book 1)
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (October, 1986)

An amazing storyThis is probably the best book of this 7 part series. It is rich in history and wonderful story telling. The characters are reminiscent of a Dickens novel - unforgettable. The main character, Stephen Nowell, has all the makings of a legendary hero. The author takes us on a remarkable journey from the world of a prominent Boston family, to Jesuit life in French Canada and then on to the battlefields with the French and the British colonial armies. You'll be on the edge of your seat as a family searches for a lost child - stolen by a Native Canadian, scarred by bigotry and set on revenge. It is a highly romantic adventure story - full of heroes and villains - and many page-turning twists. Written by an American historian who taught his students to appreciate history through story-telling -you won't want to put this book down. You'll be happy to know that the saga continues through 6 more books! Although this one was my favorite - the rest are equally addictive.

Blue Ashes: Selected Poems: 1982-1998 (Essential Poets Series 94)
Published in Paperback by Guernica Editions (30 December, 1999)
Average review score:

just the lyrical truth...at turns painful and reassuring but always powerful, Daoust's poems are always alertly written. The book's namesake is a poem about the thorny love between the poet at 6 years and a 20-year old, but this potentially repulsive subject is so hypnotically worded as to cause addiction. Several pieces stick out in my mind, like "A New York Prayer", a needy plea for material boon, and "The Sleeping Angel", lush balm for the ear of desire. Buy it - a bewitching compendium of a seductively malign poet's work.

The Blue Mountains of China (New Canadian Library ; No. 108)
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (January, 1975)
Average review score:

A great Canadian novelA very moving and powerful novel that tells the story of the Mennonites who fled the Soviet Union to escape religious persecution. Although not as highly acclaimed as some of his other works, The Blue Mountains of China is perhaps one of the great Canadian novels.

Bluesprint : Black British Columbian Literature and Orature
Published in Paperback by Arsenal Pulp Press (January, 2003)
Average review score:

Beautiful Blues PeopleThis collection is not only beautiful but hugely significant in the marking of a totally unique Black Experience. Congratulations to Mr.Compton for bringing this to light! The history of the western most province in Canada is unusual in that it is one of very few places that does not, or rather, no longer, has a centralised black Community.A positive aspect of this is that it is not a ghettoised community. The difficult part is that one can have the sense that this still significant and growing community is permanently fractured. What Compton does so well is bring this unique history together. This beautiful blues people pioneering history appears alongside the children of hiphop now. One gets an overview that stretches and eases into that phat orange Pacific sunset.
The book is an inspired Rocky Mountain solid collection of historical document and contemporary prose and poetry .
Recline and read.

sinister and forebodingSwift's poetry is at once erotic and playful, sinister and foreboding. It reads like Georgia O'Keefe's stranger paintings. Hot with death and cold in passion, he plays with the reader, manipulating us ... but does it feel good

C' Force to Hong Kong: A Canadian Catastrophy
Published in Hardcover by Dundurn Press, Ltd. (August, 1997)
Average review score:

A fine work of Canadian military historyI found this slim volume a superior history of an oft overlooked part of Canada's WWII participation. I've had the opportunity to read most everything written in Canada, and a good deal of the British work, on this topic, and while not exhaustive, this book covers most every aspect of the battle and imprisonment of the Canadians quite well. There are the odd errors (and they are very minor,) but otherwise, the book picks up on some important themes in its limited length. The only drawback the its somewhat expensive price, for it is a slim volume.

Delightfully usefulSimple, clear and compelling for anybody in the business and social sector thinking about or working towards beneficial change on our planet.
This book provides an extraordinary example of environmental journalism...delightfully useful, I would think, for students, teachers or interested others, Canadians and others with whom we share this planet.
Thank you Mr. Keating.
